Be Thou My Vision

About the Song

Be Thou My Vision is over a millennium and a half old! It was a text used in 400 AD by the very newly forming Church of Christ-followers. This was one of the primary passages of prayer and guidance that was held to during that early time. Obviously it wasn't until much later that it was translated into English and set to rhyme, and received the music from a beautiful Irish melody dating centuries back.

As the song is beautiful in its antiquity, the goal was for young people to sing it comfortably and engagingly to the Father in a worship setting. Preserving the melody, a trendier progression of beautiful chords rooted in a minor key gave way to the last verse exploding into triumphant major at the end as it proclaims: "High King of heaven, my Victory won. May I reach Heaven's Joys bright Heaven's Son! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall. Still be my Vision, O Ruler of All."

The wonderful catch is a new chorus which flowed out after a time of worship one evening, which summed up the prayer song in an upward statement. "Through Your Life I find Life, through Your eyes I see. From treasures I wished for, to Jesus my need! Savior I live for answer my call, and Be Thou My Vision, O Ruler of All!
